Video - Workbench - Fake Nylon... 25-10-2006

Here's a small video of the a Fake Nylon sound achieved with the creative use of the Workbench program. This clip was taken during the Line 6 User Group Meeting in Germany in September 2006. Don't get distracted by what you see..., listen...

The player, Ron Huisen, is a productspecialist for Line 6, made new patches for his Variax, here's just one of his creations.

This Fake Nylon clip can work well inside a complete mix. No, it's not a real nylon guitar but a simulation made with a Variax Workbench program with the use of a Variax Electric and a Vetta patch. Both are downloadable and accompanied by a video clip that shows it played live in a mix.

Gearbox - Plug-In vs Hardware, Digital vs Analog... 10-10-2006

The DI-Gold and DI-Silver are both the same TonePort DI, the included models are the only difference (so there is no digital out connection). Users of the PODxt, XTLive, UX2, UX1, KB37, and GuitarPort will be able to purchase the VST plugin upgrade and activate their gear to make use of the plugins.

So if you're wanting to keep your Variax output purely digital while recording, then you'd need at XTLive which obviously supports Variax connection, and supports direct audio recording via the audio drivers. You have to use the audio driver contol panel to change to the right driver when recording the dry Variax output for reamping purposes.

But don't go dismissing the analog route with the Variax either. You can use your Variax with the stereo-cable and power supply, and route the 1/2" out into the instrument input of the TonePort, and have the XLR out routed to my DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), either way you can record a dry/direct signal into your recording app, and then use the VST plugins for reamping purposes. There aren't any significant differences in recording the Variax dry signal purely digital or analog.

In addition...the PodXT, UX2, and VST plugins all sound virtually identical, but since the VST plugs are software, and are therefore purely digital, there is a slight sonic advantage to using the VST plugs in favor of recording from the hardware outputs of the other gear. Here's more Tonport info
