Daniel Lemoine has made the Beta version of the Tweakwizard that we'll adress below, but it's also nice to see a face of the guy who made this new software and was also responsable for the FCB files for the different Line 6 amps and of course the Flextone Tuner Wizard. It's time to give you the face behind the posts and emails. So here he is...

What is Tweak Wizard ?

TweakWizard is a powerful tool for tones comparison with a Line6 Flextone III. It's purpose is not to be a competitor for Line6Edit, but to complete it with useful features. The main one is the ability to have two tones in memory, and to swap each other for instant comparison. You can also set the Tuner frequency from 430 to 450 Hz.

You can:

• Make all deep tone editing from the computer.
• Compare two different tones -> this allows you to easily manage the Channel volume as both tones get the same volume.
• Compare a tone with itself, with some variations.
• Compare the volume difference between full power and volume pedal min position.
• Copy settings (Tone name,Amp, Cab, Mic,Gate, Comp, EQ, Rev,Delay, Mod) from one tone to another.
• Reorganize the tones in the different Flex memory locations
• Adjust the tone volume with a Fletcher-Munson correction
• Export the tones names and settings in a printable file ( either in a text editor or in a Calc sheet )
• Save and recall tones as single tones ( .twt) or bundles (.twb) and export the settings in a printable file ( like Flex tones )

The Midi communication is now both ways. All tweakings on Flex control panel will be reflected in TweakWizard.

What do you need?

The only thing you'll need is a computer and MIDI inrface with MIDI in & MIDI out cables connected. Of course you're Flextone III and you're ready to use the program.

nd the operator says; Of course, just follow these guidelines...

• Midi ports. At first use, you will have to choose your Midi In and Out ports in the Menu. The program will self-detect the flex if it is On. Your Midi ports will then be stored in a .ini file and will be set at next launch.

• Speed connection. If you have problems ( Flex can't connect, or get not connected during tones loading or saving ), choose a slower speed in the Menu.
  The connexion speed is stored in the .ini file too.

• Refresh. This button allows uploading tones in case of running the program with the Flex Off, or if a communication failure occurs. The communication state is shown in the window, as the Firmware version.
  
• Preferences ( customization)

  You can here adapt the defaults settings and program look to your taste.

• Author's name. ( It is not used at this time, but could be in further versions)
  
• Default directories. You can choose the default tones folder ( for tones & bundles save) and the default export print folder.
• Tone1 & Tone2 preferences.
  For each tones edited, you can
  - Choose if the Edit buffer will be loaded or not at startup.
  - Select the default amp model used for creating a new tone from scratch.
  - Customize the colours of the buttons and names for each tone.

• TONES SETTINGS

Most features are self-documented. All continuous controls are made with sliders. 'PRE' and 'POST' buttons are toggles. All effects can be set On/Off with the square Green or Orange/Grey buttons ( ON = Green or Orange)
'Set' buttons give you access to extra-parameters ( you can test the Wah with the mouse ).

Please Note: All settings are adapted to the Flextone III Firmware version. Exceptions: you will not get the Gain control of the Compressor with the v1.10. You won't get the Volume min. control with the 1.00 version.

Special features

• 'Load link'

When lit, choosing an amp model loads that model with default settings ( EQ, Rev, Comp, Gate ). When shut off, amp is loaded without defaults.

• 'Volume control position'

This is the Volume PRE/POST toggle. At each press, you'll switch the volume control position. The position is lit, next to the Slider which is controlled:
Drive for PRE
Channel Volume for POST

• 'Volume Min' control (v1.10 firmware)

Adjust the Vol min pedal position, and instant test the difference with the "Test button". The small window below shows you if you are in Min or MAX volume. Changing the min pos in Min mode is not allowed (slider disabled ). This is a choice made because if you would be moving the slider in Min mode, when returning to Max mode it'll give you a bad Vol min. setting.

• EQ Correction (Fletcher-Munson Correction)

Switching in EQ correction mode allows to change the overall SPL ( Sound Pressure Level = Volume ) of the tone without changing it's tonal perception.

Obviously, as tone perception is subjective and depending on a lot of parameters such as the room and so on, the correction will not be fully automatic. It will give you a first basis setting.

a) Choose the original estimated SPL of the tone and the knobs correction range

b) Set the volume of the tone with the 'Channel Volume' slider.
The Bass and Treble sliders will self-move as to keep the same tonal perception for the tone.

You can make some fine corrections though by moving the Bass and Treble sliders then. But keep in mind they would be lost if you tweak the Channel Volume slider after that ( Think to the Delay & Mod knobs behaviour in '2nd function mode ' )
To make those fine tunes, the best is to set the EQ correction 'Off' before.

Note: Selecting a new tone, changing the Amp model , copying the Amp model or the EQ settings from a tone to another one will make the EQ correction switch Off.

• TAP button

This control needs a whole edit buffer transfer from the amp at each action. So, the 'TAP' button is only visible and active when the Flex is connected and in the active selected tone.

• SWAP & COPY
• SWAP is the compare button. Hitting it makes the Flextone instantly switch from one tone to the other. The selected tone is shown with the appropriate colour in the central window.
  

• COPY Allows copying settings from one tone to the other.

You can change the Source / Destination ( the arrow will reflect the setting).
Then select what must be copied by checking the needed boxes.

• SELECTING & SAVING TONES

You can select tones with the 'Select' buttons. This allows you to load the Edit Buffer too.

• 'WRITE' button
  Use this button to save the selected tone ( green or orange ) in a memory location.
  The tone name can be changed in each tone name window, NOT in the 'Selected' one.
• 'SAVE as Amp Def' button
  Use it for replacing your Amp def settings with the new ones ( for the selected Amp in the tone ).
  This works as you would push for 5 s the Amps/Cabs knob on the Flex control panel.
• 'NEW' button
  Use this button to create a new tone from scratch.
  The tone will be created with the Amp default settings defined in the 'Preferences' Menu, with 'New1' or 'New2' name..

• ORGANIZE TONES

This new v3.0 feature allows a general reorganization of tones in the memory locations by Drag & Drop ( more powerful than a single swap one )
The reorganization is NOT instant. It is done after leaving the reorganization window, if you press the 'Do it !!' button.
So, you can be confident and make tries and fails. All your tones stay organized as they were as long as you don't willingly click on the 'Do it !!' button.

• Export Tones, Names & Settings.

You can export the tones and settings list in a .txt file ( 'Flex_tones.txt') with the dedicated button. This file is written in the program location folder.

The file can be saved for a Text editor use ( "Raw text") or for beeing imported in a Spreadsheet or a Database ( "Delimited"). The field delimiter is the 'Tab' character.

 

Note : In the 'Pre' section, Threshold's and Wah pos can't be selected if the related 'state' is not selected.
In the 'Post' section, Delay Feedback, Mod Param 2 and Extra params can't be selected if Mix or Time/speed are not selected.
(Test the check boxes behaviour )
Vol min and Comp gain will be shown or not according to the Flex firmware version. (The picture above is for v 1.1 )

All numeric values are displayed in %, except thresholds ( dB), Gate decay & Delay time (ms), Mod speed (Hz), and Tap tempo (BPM). The export is fully parameterable

• SAVE and RESTORE Single Tones or Bundles

  1) Single tones ( .twt extension files )
  
  a)'Edit' button or 'Edit tone' File Menu items: Loads a tone file in the current active tone ( Selected)
  b)'Save selected' File Menu item: Saves the current active tone ( Selected) as a file in the default directory with the tone name as default name
  ( can be changed )
  c)'Amp/Files transfers' Menu item
  This allows managing the tones in the Flex memory: save or restore tones to/from single files on disk.
  Dble click in the Flex tones grid sets the file name in the Edit box.

  
  d)'Amp/Bundle transfers' Menu item
  Same as previous, but from tones stored in a bundle instead of single file ones. You get two grids: The bundle one, and the Flex tones one.You can make all transfers as needed.
  Special feature: transfers in Edit buffer ( Tone 1 or tone 2)
  You can transfer the actual edited tones in the bundle instead of the Flex patches.
  But, more interesting, is to load bundle tones in the Edit buffers: This allows you to test the bundle tones on the fly....

e) Bundles
- Save bundle: Saves all tones and amp defaults in a single file (.twb extension)
- Load bundle: Restore tones and / or amp defaults in Flex memory ( you can choose either tones, or amp defaults, or both )
- Manage bundles: Behaviour is identical as the 'Amp/Files tranfers, but with bundle tones instead of Flex ones: You can save a tone from the bundle as a single file, or load a single file tone in the bundle.

 

• EXPORT SETTINGS

The behaviour is identical at the Amp settings one.

You can export the settings of a single tone file, or select the tones or amp defaults within a bundle file.

• TUNER

Just click on the arrows to set the new A reference.
Note you must wait for at least 5 or 6 seconds before switching the Flex Off if you want your modifications to be memorized.

Also be aware of the poor sound quality, this was taken live during exhabition with no direct plugging into a board. Surrounding sounds and people talking are just taken in. So this live quality of instrument sounds is far from representative.

Miscellaneous and the date April 4, 2004. That's real nice day, A bit crazy, a bit of everything "a once in a lifetime event". On this page there will be al sorts of stuff, that haven't got an own menu and never may get one. However some remarks, info's could be nice to keep around.
