Spider Valve MkII - V.1.50 Opening Up - Changes... 13-03-2010 Comments (0)

a few thoughts as you explore the sound design changes Line 6 made with the update V. 1.50 for Spider Valve MkII. -

Bundle Save
If you want to save your existing self-made presets after the update, start Spider Valve MkII edit with the amp connected so your existing User presets load, (or hit "receive all")  then be sure to do a "Save Bundle" to your desktop. This at least give you a record of what you'd been using before the update, BUT- the sounds of those presets will definitely change and need to be tweaked.

More Gain
There is now more gain going into the tube stages of the amp, and this means that you'll need to re-learn the relationship of the Drive, Channel Volume and Master Volume. I know it might take a bit more work, and we know it's always a little dicey updating the sound of something that a lot of folks have already gotten used to, but we felt it was worth doing.  The short answer why we did it  is we felt that in live situations, the amp could be made to perform better.

Opening Up On Stage
A big part of sound design is  balancing between trying to make an amp that sound great in the store, great in your bedroom, and great on a stage when everyone's cranked. We thought our initial pass was a bit too much geared toward the lower volume experience, so  we tried to "open up" the sound by tweaking how much the amp compressed, adding some gain so the tubes could add some more harmonics, dealing with some frequency issues, etc. While it might take a bit more time to rediscover your sweet spot, I hope that overall you'll find the amp has more b**ls now, and is more exciting harmonically. I hope, I hope. : )

Factory restore after update
Once you've saved anything you want to save, be sure you do a factory restore after the update- (hold down the Channel A button on power up, and press the "presets" encoder") Without doing that, levels will be all over the place and amp model defaults will not be correctly loading.

Spider Valve MkII - Changes to Models and MIDI... 25-02-2010 Comments (0)

Here's some additional info on the release of Spider Infusion for Spider Valve MkII, reworks on the amp models and MIDI implementation and use.

Line 6 won't be releasing Spider FX Infusion/Edit for SV MkII this week, Line 6 is still pulling it all together and expect the release within the next two weeks.

As for what's in the update- it correlates pretty much to the Spider IV update in terms of the effects and editor. The SV MkII has it's own editor and own patch format. Additionally,  Line 6 has done some more sound design on the models in the MkII. They felt the amp wasn't quite responding as they wanted, particularly when pushed.

There is definitely more gain across the board, and there should also be more headroom particularly on the clean and mid gain models. If you love what you have now, you'll still be able to get it by adjusting your gain staging, but there will ultimately be more there when you reach for it. Time is also used to make some improvements based on some of the feed back they recieved.

Line 6 also upgraded the midi implementation- you'll know be able to generate a complete midi dump from the amp to back up your whole system, and  a more complete midi spec in a separate doc will be published on line.

I don't know how many of you with SV MkII's are midi guys, but there are some really fun things to do with this amp if you do want to daisy chain multiple amps. All knob controls are sent downstream via midi so any adjustment you make on one front panel is updated in an amp or amps you have next in line, OR you can control multiple SV MkII's with one floorboard. It's very slick- just send the FBV into the first amp, and midi out to midi in on the next one. Very fun, and yes, a little expensive- but FUN.
