POD X3 series - Submit your Bundles to the Bundle Barn... 24-04-2008

Bundle Barn

As an extended service, Vettaville.nl offers a place called the Bundle Barn to have your patch bundles in one place with some additional info on the contents of the bundle. Many Line 6 gear users have been making patches and swapping them around for personal use. Creating patches and adjusting them to your own standard of quality involves creating, altering, listening, adjusting etc. Individual patches can be submitted to Custom Tone. At present Bundles can't be uploaded there. That's where Vettaville.nl comes in, here's how..

The purpose of the Bundle Barn is to have one place on the net where you can easily download these bundles and check them for yourself. Of course your musical preferences will also decide what kind of bundle(s) you are looking for. You can alter your own bundle or get new ideas from the downloaded bundle(s).

If a bundle is offered please include as much as info on what you made it with as you possible. What guitar was used, what Line 6 gear the bundle is made with, what softwareversion number, the general idea of the bundle, the kind of music that you generally play.

If the bundle is made with Variax Workbench you can do the same of course. Feel free to offer your bundle for upload here and sent it through the emaillink at the top of the page. Don't forget to get your name in that you want displayed here as a reference. The bundles are not altered or checked by Vettaville.nl so use them and qualify for yourself

With this all being said... don't hesitate and start sending in new bundles... that's convinient for you and your fellow Line 6 users. You can find the Bundle Barn here.

POD X3 series - Workbench, Variax and POD X3 functionality... 03-03-2008

Many people have been asking about Variax/ X3 Live functionality with Workbench and Monkey. Here's the answer both of these questions:

At present with Monkey V. 1.23, Monkey isn't supposed to detect my Variax through the X3 Live. This is because Line 6 turned Monkey functionality off in regards to this because of the lack of Workbench support. LIne 6 doesn't not want to confuse people into possibly thinking that because Monkey works, Workbench will too.

In regards to when there will be a Workbench release for X3 Live and Variax Line 6 states that at this time there is no scheduled release date for Workbench. Although, they are hoping to release it around the same time as Gearbox.

Line 6 made great progress on Gearbox over the last couple of weeks and it looks like we'll see a release (barring any unexpected issues) very, very soon.

POD X3 series - Gearbox for POD X3 delayed II... 01-03-2008

Line 6 were able to release V. 1.11.0 of the POD X3 firmware today. This update addresses a number of issues as well as implements new behind the scenes features required for GearBox support. Because much of the editor has to be developed in serial with those changes- the GearBox editor is not yet ready for public release. Line 6 is doing everything they can to close up the last remaining issues as quickly as possible. The bottom line is that they don’t want to release this until they are confident that it is going to supply the best customer experience possible. Please watch the announcements here for a more comprehensive release date in the next few weeks.

On a positive note- we've also added two new features to POD X3 firmware that resolve two of the most common requests we've seen here in the forums:

A-B Mode: now when pressing the Dual Tone switch while tone 2 is off, you will audibly toggle between tone 1 and tone 2 in a patch. This is great for editing, because you can now easily demo each tone individually before turning tone 2 'on' in your patch. An additional side benefit is that if you are primarily using single tones, you have effectively doubled your total preset count with an extremely fast and easy way to toggle between two commonly used sounds.

Delay Remain: when using A-B mode, you now get delay trails when toggling between the two tones within a patch. This has been one of the most common requests for a number of years, and now you can set up any of your presets as two single tones within a patch that allow for a completely seamless transition between one another, without having to use the volume pedal.

POD X3 series - Double Whammy... 30-01-2008

Whammy Bender doubled up, audio sample and X3 patch available for free download

Bending creativity

Mr. Slugworth from the Line 6 forums has offered a suggestion on how to use Your POD X3 Live and the Bender feature on both tones to achieve what he described as becoming an "instant guitar hero." Given that the X3L has a much, MUCH nicer pedal than the XTL, and the bender seems to have improved, and (most importantly) using DUAL TONES and a rudimentary understanding of musical intervals you can make a crazy tone. Based on the Whammy! tone that is in the 5 most popular XTL tones at customtone.com, just doubled up, and switched up the heel/toe positions. With dual tones, you have 2 whammy's at once. The Double Whammy effect.

Audio MP3 example

Here is
a very short .mp3 tone sample (0:16) just to give an idea of how it sounds. Listen to it in STEREO if possible.

Tone 1: Whammy, nice rich Eurotrash 80's big hair sine chorus lead sound. Panned hard right, heel on 0, toe on 12.

Tone 2: Same exact tone as 1, but heel on 3, toe on 15 panned hard left.

Still here? Interesting isn’t it. Well read on then...

You can change the intervals of the toe/heel position to go between different keys and modes. In stereo with hard panning it sounds insane. You can sound like double-tracked Yngwie, Paul Gilbert, or even recreate the sound of dueling guitar gods (Jason Becker and Marty Friedman, anyone?) and do it totally live.

Mr. Slugworth also graciously shared the patch with us.  Since we are still awaiting a PC-based editor for the POD X3 series, the only way to share the patch was by sharing the entire bundle

Patch 11A in the bundle, called "Whammy!Whammy!" is the sound described in this article.  Mr. Slugworth warns us that the rest of the bundle is still very much a work in progress so use it at your own risk...  You can use Line 6 Monkey to load just patch 11A into your existing bundle.  It will let you pick which bank to import into. BE SURE TO USE THE LATEST MONKEY AND FIRMWARE so that the tweak pedal settings are also imported!

If you want to alter or tweak the tone here’s some additional advice:

Stereo is the best way to go with this, so if you are playing through one amp, better plug in a second one, or stereo monitors, or headphones, it will be worth it. The patch was tweaked for dual parallel vintage humbuckers (Dean Z with JB/59). On most guitars with 2 humbuckers, that's the middle position on your pickup switch.  Also, if you want to decrease the "chirp" sound in the pick attack, reduce the decay level of the noise gate.

The key to this sound is the separate signal chains.  As opposed to harmonizers on the market, the X3's dual tones allow the harmonized sounds to come out rich and full.  The principle not only applies to this patch, but virtually any patch -- just double your tone, and on the second tone use the Bender stomp and set it at the interval you like. Set the Bender postion at +/- 3 for a minor third interval, +/- 4 for a major third, and so forth.  You can even set the toe and heel positions to switch intervals by setting the tweak function to control the stomp position.

Thanks go out to Mr. Slugworth for this great application of DUAL TONES!

POD X3 series - Preset Folders II... 28-01-2008

Preset Folders Settings available for download.
POD X3 and POD X3 Live include over 350 presets to cover a wide range of styles. These presets store complete amp-and-effect selections and settings that you can call up at the touch of a button. These presetsetting are now available for download. Of these presets, there are 128 User locations that you can use to store your own custom tones.

These folders of presets are available:

  • USER: any presets you save go here (128 total) (not in overview below, can be adjusted individually)
  • LOGAIN: for electric guitar (30)
  • HIGAIN: for electric guitar (30)
  • FX HVY: for electric guitar (20)
  • SONGS: for electric guitar (40)
  • ACOU: for acoustic guitar (15)
  • VOCAL: for vocals (15)
  • BASS: for bass guitar (40)
  • BLENDS: Dual Tone Blends for electric guitar (30)
  • DUAL: Dual Tone Pairs for independent inputs (30)

It’s important to remember that since POD X3 and POD X3 Live have Dual Tone functionality, each preset actually stores settings for both Tone 1 and Tone 2. In fact, separate names for Tone 1 and Tone 2 are stored in each preset. This comes in very handy when recalling presets. In the overview you'll see both tones displayed and the (amp)model used.

At this link you can see and print the information. Here you can download the information as a .pdf file.

POD X3 series - Gearbox for POD X3 delayed... 12-01-2008

As the date approaches for Gearbox support of POD X3, it has become apparent that Line 6 is behind schedule. Throughout the course of development Line 6 had to make decisions to improve the application which in turn costs additional development time. The good thing is that this additional development time will allow us to deliver you a more robust and functional editor.

At this time, Line 6 is looking at a target release date of February 29th.

In an effort to maintain an open dialog to those of you awaiting this software release we will be posting another update as to the progress we’ve made on February 15th.

Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter and we look forward to updating you in the near future.

POD X3 series - Dual Tone "Spiritguitar" Bundle Flashdemo... 07-01-2008

Many POD X3 users have requested the patches that are used for the X3 online flashdemo. We present you a special bundle that holds the actual quality dual tones as we reported 2 days ago. These are created by Line 6's "Spiritguitar" and here's  some additional information . He has created (almost) all the sounds of the Dual Tone Demo both here and on the Line 6 website.

Please note: These are the actual Presets Spiritguitar used along with a few extras that were not included on the Dual Tones page, together with the included normal presetbundle and a very worthwhile free download.

After the download, save it to your desktop with a right-click on PC or Control-click on Mac. Then launch Monkey with your X3 connected and follow these instructions:

a. Click the Backup and Restore tab
b. Click Advanced...
c. Click the Choose button and navigate to the Spiritguitar DualTones Bundle on your desktop
d. Select radio button "Only User Banks" and from the dropdown menus select 21 to 26
e. On the right, select TO "Starting at: 21A"

Banks 21 thru 26 should load into your X3 Banks 21 thru 26. You may need to adjust overall levels, or tweak for your particular guitar -- most are fairly even. If you want to load them into different Banks, just select different destination Banks in Step e above.

FYI, this Bundle is essentially the latest Factory Bundle, except Spiritguitar added his Presets in Banks 21 thru 26 plus and edited 5A and 5B. So you should already have the other Presets, and therefor don't need to load the whole Bundle.

Thanks go out to Line 6's "Spiritguitar" for making it available for vettaville.nl. As a form of appreciation we would kindly suggest you to check out his website.
Spiritguitar is Russell DaShiell, best known for his lead guitar work on the million-selling hit single 'Spirit In The Sky'. Check out his original music at http://spiritguitar.com.

If you click on the picture beneath you'll be re-directed to the special online demo that has been created bu Spiritguitar so you can hear the different sounds seperatly or as dualtones.

It requires a fast broadband connection, so please be patient.  A window will appear that is blank until the Flash loads, also made by Spiritguitar -- there's no preloader/progress bar -- but with a fast connection it will load in a minute or two.

POD X3 series - Power Consumption... 03-01-2008

Power consumption on POD X3 series is different from the other POD series and uses a different power supply (included with your POD X3 in the box). The POD XT's would have been able to run ok off of 1200 mA power supply but that's not the case with the X3. The X3 needs the full 2000 mA in order to run. This is because of the new processors and hardware improvements Line 6 made electronically to the device. The processors alone are roughly 4 times faster than that of those on the XT.

It's suggested using the included power supply with the POD X3.
