Gearbox
- Gearbox Beta for Vista info... 27-01-07
Yesterday, we announced that there will be a public beta release
of GearBox for Vista (which includes drivers) soon and that we would
keep you informed... . Well, here's more info already.
At the Winter NAMM trade show last week, Line 6 announced that
RTAS compatibility would be added to the GearBox Plug-in. This will
come in the form of "GearBox 3.1" a free downloadable update which
we expect to release within the next two weeks. This update includes
a bit more than just RTAS compatibility for Plug-in customers - here
are the highlights:
1. RTAS compatibility is added to the GearBox Plug-in. Existing GearBox
Plug-in owners will be able to use the plug-in with ProTools once they
have installed GearBox 3.1.
2. Public Beta for Vista compatibility: Not every provider of recording
solutions is equally prepared for the Windows Vista OS release, so as
a first step toward full Vista support, we have made sure that our application,
drivers and plug-in are installable and operate as expected under Vista
(32 bit version only) . However, we are not yet able to promise a specific
date for official Vista support. We'll post some info on specific known
issues once the release is available.
We'll refine Vista-specific behavior in future development, but want
to get your feedback on how this first stage is working for you via our
new Support Community - the central point of information exchange for
users who are making the Vista jump. Please help us to craft better support
for our products with your questions and observations.
3.The GearBox Plug-in add-on for existing hardware will include
the 6 mic preamps and 5 bass amps/cabs found in the "Silver Bundle" for
all users when running the Plug-in version of GearBox. Customers who
have already purchased the GearBox Plug-in add-on will automatically
get the new models once they install the GearBox 3.1 update.
4. Several bugs from GearBox 3.0 have been fixed - details will accompany
the release.

Gearbox
- Plugins vs Hardware, Digtal vs Analog... 10-10-06
The DI-Gold and DI-Silver are both
the same TonePort DI, the included models are the only difference (so
there is no digital out connection). Users of the PODxt, XTLive, UX2,
UX1, KB37, and GuitarPort will be able to purchase the VST plugin upgrade
and activate their gear to make use of the plugins.
So if you're wanting to keep your Variax output purely digital while
recording, then you'd need at XTLive which obviously supports Variax
connection, and supports direct audio recording via the audio drivers.
You have to use the audio driver contol panel to change to the right
driver when recording the dry Variax output for reamping purposes.
But don't go dismissing the analog route with the Variax either. You
can use your Variax with the stereo-cable and power supply, and route
the 1/2" out into the instrument input of the TonePort, and have the
XLR out routed to my DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), either way you
can record a dry/direct signal into your recording app, and then use
the VST plugins for reamping purposes. There aren't any significant differences
in recording the Variax dry signal purely digital or analog.
In addition...the
PodXT, UX2, and VST plugins all sound virtually identical, but since
the VST plugs are software, and are therefore purely digital, there
is a slight sonic advantage to using the VST plugs in favor of recording
from the hardware outputs of the other gear.

Guitarport
XT - Guitarport Online / Gearbox / Toneport... 27-07-06
GuitarPort® XT introduces the powerful new GearBox™ software
platform to GuitarPort. GuitarPort XT is coming late summer 2006.
- GuitarPorts and TonePorts will offer the same support for GuitarPort
Online - now for both Mac and PC. Tones you download are totally
transferrable, but tracks are keyed to the device. In other words,
you can cancel your subscription for the GuitarPort and sign up with
the TonePort no problem, but you'd have to re-download any tracks
you got with the GuitarPort to be able to play them with your TonePort.
Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause, but that's the way the
system works - largely because of licensing issues for the content
that is online. It's kind of similar to the iTunes music store and
limitations surrounding computers and iPods that will play the music
you buy from their store.
-
Does this mean that my model packs will now apply to both GuitarPort
and TonePort? Your model packs are all tied to the hardware they
are installed into. If you use your GuitarPort with the GearBox
software, you'll see the same models you see now when using GuitarPort
software. If you use your TonePort, you will see the same models
you see now when running GearBox 1 with your TonePort. In both cases, you'll see a few new models because there were
a few new models added to both the GuitarPort and TonePort standard
model sets.
-
Will this also be true for the VST version? When you install the Plug-in option into a PODxt device, TonePort,
or GuitarPort, you will be able to run as plug-ins the model set
that is activated in the device you install the upgrade into. We
know that's a mouthful, but that's the deal.
In the case were you would own a Guitarport and all Modelpacks,
you'd see a plug-in that contained the standard TonePort model
set if you install the option into your TonePort, but you'd get
the GuitarPort plus some Model Packs as well in the plug-in if
you install the option into your GuitarPort that has Model Packs.
Of course, only the TonePort device has the Mic Pre models and
the 5 Bass Amp/Cab models. You might consider transferring the
packs to the TonePort to get the most out of the Plug-in add-on.
- Nothing changes for GuitarPort or Model Pack support. Think of "GearBox
2.0" as the next version of the GuitarPort software beyond v2.51. It's
just been renamed. Look at the GearBox 2.0 screenshot
- Everything from GuitarPort v2.51 is still in there. Line 6 had
a lot of requests for a version of GuitarPort that works on the Mac
and also a lot of requests for GuitarPort to be updated to support
the PODxt V3 software and the new Bass Expansion model pack. This
is precisely that update.
- The *only* downside to this update is that for existing Windows
users, the new version now only works on Windows XP, but anyone still
using an old operating system can continue to use GuitarPort 2.51.
- It is likely that you will be able to install GearBox 2.0 under
Windows 2000 and it *may* work. However, it will definitely not be
officially supported and Line 6 will not spend time trying to troubleshoot
or fix bugs if there happen to be issues with running under that
OS.
- GearBox is the same software for PODxt's, GuitarPorts, and TonePorts.
Line 6 will be posting one download and there will be only one installer
CD. It has all of the playing, ripping, half speed, browsing, etc.
on both Mac and PC.
- The processing will be done in your computer, whether you're using
a PODxt or a TonePort. The signal routing will be exactly as it is
in GearBox currently - and I don't think there's any difference between
that and current GuitarPort software.
- For another matter; screen size. The screen size limitations are
the same. For the last year, GearBox and GuitarPort have basically
been different versions of the same app. Now they're synchronizing
again, but only the GearBox name carries forward.
- As always you can use the Guitarport XT as an editor for PODxt
series aswell.
GuitarPort XT works with both PC
and Mac computers, including the new Intel-based OS X machines.

Gearbox
- The Changes part II... 24-07-06
Keep in mind that Line 6 have announced two different updates. One
merges GuitarPort online functions with the GearBox app and adds Intel
support and some new models. This is GearBox 2 and is expected sometime
in August. The other is GearBox 3 and adds the ability to run Plug-ins
of GearBox in Mac AU and Win VST supported recording apps, and also supports
the new device - TonePort KB37. That's definitely happening by the end
of the year.
- Both GearBox updates are free, but the plug-in functionality is a
paid upgrade. We have a few internal details to work out before I'm prepared
to talk about the price, but it will definitely be the same amount regardless
of the product you install it into.
- There is only one GearBox application. Install it once and it will
work with whatever supported device you happen to plug in to your computer.
I have a single installation and go between connecting a UX1, UX2,
GuitarPort and PODxt Live.
- You can only use one interface with GearBox
at a time. Some of the graphics and options change conditionally based
on what is connected. GearBox always contains the models that are activated
in the hardware device you are connected to at the time.
- The model pack universe will not change or be affected by any of
these releases (see the one exception in my last answer). The Silver
and Gold bundles simply represent packaged "bundles" (ie - they include hardware)
that you can purchase in a store which include the plug-in functionality
along with either the standard TonePort model set (silver) or with <Power
Pack, Metal Shop, Collector Classics, FX Junkie, and Bass Expansion> included
(gold). You don't need to buy the storebought bundle if you already
have GearBox supported hardware.
- The plug-in add-on will be
a license key asset that you install with the Line 6 Monkey. Once you
install it, any models authorized to run on that device will appear
in the GearBox plug-in. Add more model packs and they will show up
in both the standalone app and in the Plug-in. Remove model packs and
they disappear from both places.
- If you own the GearBox plug-in, you
can use your hardware for ToneDirect monitoring. This gives extremely
low latencies for TonePorts and GuitarPorts and "zero latency" for
PODxt devices. You'll need to disable input monitoring in your DAW
to use this.
- You don't have to use the hardware for audio at all -
it can simply be used as a dongle if you choose. Then, the latency
will depend on your system and your recording app's buffer size. Use
it to get wacky and run your drums through an amp model like people
often do with Amp Farm (our TDM plug-in). And/or, use a tape echo on
a vocal.
- Keep in mind that although the GearBox plug-in is a single
plug-in that has the entire signal chain, you can turn any item in
the chain off and it will not chew up processor cycles. Just running
a delay alone is way less processor intensive than running an amp model
with some effects. No, I don't have any specific quantifiable info
in this regard.
- You can use multiple instances of the plug-in - even
if you only have it installed into one device. Use as many as your
system can handle...
- Line 6 can't talk yet about specifics of what
sends are avialable per device and per mode. You will definitely be
able to record dry and monitor wet with any device.
- All of the same
upgrades, including RiffWorks, the Bass Expansion Model Pack, and GuitarPort
Online, will be available to any GearBox compatible device as of the
release of GearBox 2.0.
- The GuitarPort
and TonePort standard model set will add some new models described
here: http://line6.com/guitarport/xt.html and
the Power Pack will get the rest of the models that were released with
the PODxt V3 update, described here: http://line6.com/podxt/version3.html. If
you already own the Power Pack, the new models will appear as soon
as you install the GearBox 2 update.

Gearbox
- The Changes part I... 23-07-06
There's an easy way to look at all of the announced changes that are
going on with GuitarPort, TonePort and GearBox software. It may look a little confusing if you view it from the perspective of
hardware and software as it exists today, but here's an overview of the
big picture:
- There will be one common application that supports PODxt (bean,
live and pro), TonePort (UX1, UX2, and eventually KB37 & the
hardware that ships with store-bought plug-ins), and GuitarPort.
It's called GearBox.
- It fully supports PODxt devices with version 3 firmware.
- This application is compatible with Windows XP and Mac OSX Tiger
- even for Intel Macs.
- This application supports the following optional upgrades: GuitarPort
Online, all Model Packs (including the Bass Expansion Model Pack),
Plug-In functionality and RiffWorks recording software.
So far, so good? Here are some slightly more tweaky details:
- The standard model set (ie - no optional upgrades installed)
that is available in the GearBox application are determined by
your hardware - GuitarPort, TonePorts, PODxt rack/bean, and PODxt
Live all have different standard model sets.
- If you add plug-in functionality to your Line 6 Hardware, the standard
model set for that device and all model packs you have installed into
that device will work as plug-ins.

and country, most tracks are available with and without guitar.
Recorded with the same painstaking detail as the original versions, users
can learn their favorite songs by using the provided tablature, then “sit
in” with a band like Double Trouble on Stevie Ray Vaughan tunes.
GuitarPort Online members can even jam with the original master tracks
from Jimi Hendrix exclusively remixed by original engineer Eddie Kramer.
All lesson, cover, and master tracks are matched with perfectly dialed
in amp, cab and effect tones for the ultimate in-studio experience that
only Line 6 can offer.
GuitarPort XT will be available late Summer 2006.

Gearbox
- V1.02 available... 20-12-05
GearBox V1.02 has been released.
Previously, there were issues for users who had both a GuitarPort and
a TonePort on a Windows machine. Basically, the V1.02 update allows users
to swap units without causing driver issues.
Here are the main release notes:
- Updated TonePort and GuitarPort driver installers, as well as
TonePort and GuitarPort control panels, to improve compatibility
between GuitarPort v2.51 and GearBox v1.02 software on Windows
PCs (Windows XP, SP2 and Windows 2000, SP4)
- GuitarPort v2.51 ASIO now supports "96k compatibility" sample rate
mode
- Improved TonePort and GuitarPort control panel detection of connected
Line 6 USB
hardware
- Improved Windows 2000 (SP4 or newer) support for TonePort/GuitarPort
control panel

Toneport
- Input source menu... 08-11-05
The input source menu in GearBox is different depending on whether a
UX1 / UX2 is connected. There's no "Mic & Mic" option
with UX1 because it only has one Mic input.
The input options are as follows (this is not in the order they appear
in the application):
- Instrument
- Line 1
- Line 2
- Mic 1
- Mic 2
- Line Stereo
- Mic Stereo
- Line 1 & Line 2
- Mic 1 & Mic 2 (on UX2 only)
- Instrument & Mic 1
Each source has the same amp & cab (or preamp) and effect path with
a stereo output to your recording app. Taken to the extreme, this means
you can use a mic pre to record bass (a common practice) and a guitar
amp for vocals (if you want that kind of effect).
The only "dual source" inputs that have two completely separate
simultaneous processing paths are the last three items in the list -
noted by the "&." The items noted "stereo" give
you stereo in and out, but are linked with only one set of controls.
Probably the best way to record guitar and bass simultaneously is to
use the instrument in for guitar and use a direct box to plug the bass
into a Mic input.

Toneport
- ToneDirect™ and Latency...
03-11-05
ToneDirect™ monitoring, gives you fully processed audio in real
time while you track! Better than recording through plug-ins, it
avoids the latency from your recording program and operating system. ToneDirect™ also
easily beats analog direct monitoring options that force you to record
guitar without hearing the amp model and effects, or struggle to get
an inspired vocal with no reverb!
Using the analog outs from the
UX will add latency to your system. The whole concept of ToneDirect™ is
that it does the modeling at the driver level to reduce latency to the
absolute minimum.
Try running small buffer sizes
and make sure that you are monitoring through the UX1 and not using the
software monitoring feature of your program like Cubase for instance.
Line 6's driver latency is extremely low if you use the ToneDirect™ monitoring.
Host latency for software monitoring is always an issue.
