Special Vetta Meeting; added transcript... 21-02-06

l6ugnl

The 3rd Line 6 User Group meeting was a very special one. We had the first meeting with the Steve de Furia and Darrel Smith from Line 6 US, responsible for productdevelopment and Amplification. In the upcoming weeks more transcribed pages will be added at Vettaville. About the meeting... Just some highlights.

  • Darrell Smith presented how they get about working with amp modeling (highly interesting)
  • We had a discussion on why we, as users, think Vetta could be better, Line 6 was eager to learn, was open and direct on questions from us and elaborated on them. Line 6 is clearly committed to the flagship Vetta amp
  • You'll get, over time, more out of your current Vetta I / II amp

Tone Quest - Fletcher Munson... 20-02-06

vettaville.nl

Have you ever had this happen to you? You've spent the afternoon getting all your sounds perfectly tweaked for tonight's gig, but when you get there and start playing, everything sounds really..... not right?

Things sound overly bright, but also a little 'woofy', so you have to fix things on the fly as the night goes along and silently curse your amp. The next day, when you set things back up at home, you go back to re-tweak your sounds, and suddenly they sound okay again. Are you going nuts? Have your ears suddenly lost it? Is there a problem with your amp? Don't worry, they're both fine; you've just been bitten by the Fletcher-Munson curves. Here's a page explaining it and what you can do about it.

Guitar Portal - New Version 2.3 available... 14-02-06

guitarportal

There have been some new developments at the Guitar Portal site. A new Event Calender is added where you can add you own events, for all other users to notice. Quite handy!

A new patch for Guitar Portal is out brining the new version to 2.3! This new versions corrects some small errors in the chat function. When a member clicked the "register" button members would receive a blank page. This has been corrected and all members are asked to download the new version.

Also added is the Home Made Hit Show. All members of the guitar portal now have quick access to Audio feeds from the HomeMadeHitShow! ToolBar members can access the feed from the radio just look for it in the drop down menu. Guitar Portal members using the line6 add on (2.0 & 2.2) can access the feed from the "radio" page. And all members including members accessing from the "community" section of the web page can access the HomeMadeHitShow from the Guitar Portal chat by clicking the "mp3's" button and selecting the track 1 box. So no matter what format of Guitar Portal you are using you can access new music from HomeMadeHitShow! So have a listen and maybe contribute a song.

Variax Electric - Nylon String Examples... 13-02-06

variax

Variax Electric fitted with nylon strings... Often asked on the different forums. Whell here's some examples. One of the Vettaville enthousiasts made examples together with the use of Ernie Ball nylons on a Variax 300. So it can be done, but note the next paragraph.

Please note: Variax is not intended to be used this way. It's designed to be used with steel strings. If ou should fit your Variax with nylon strings and as a result of the low action, you do have to be gentle when playing.

If you wanna try this be sure to use the ones with the balls at the end. The normal classical strings can get stuck in the body of the guitar. You might need about 5db of gain to record nice tracks. There where no setup adjustments on the used Variax 300 for these recordings.

Variax Workbench - String volume... 04-02-06

workbench

If you have Workbench and you want to balance out your six strings, here's how and some information to keep in mind.

  • Step 1 would be to balance out your six strings via the Editor menu item: String Volume Setup. This is a global setting, for all Models.
  • Step 2 would be to simply adjust the overall Volume Trim for each Model if you want them all about equal. as you would for Amp Presets. Just be careful not to clip if you're boosting. It might be safer to lower the loudest, like the Lester.

Keep in mind the original design is to Model the guitars as they really are, which includes volume differences, say between a Strat and Les Paul.

  • When you've changed your settings or patches save all your new settings to your hard disk as a Bundle for backup

One other thing - Equal volumes of all models -

While the string balance thing is good, you can question the long-term wisdom of setting all guitar models to the same output level. Part of the sound of a electric guitar is how hard it hits the front end of an amp and, in consequence, how it makes that amp distort. A Les Paul does have a higher output than a Strat, and that is part of why it sounds like it does through an amp.

If you have the physical guitars and switch back and forth between them with the same amp, you'll find that you would have to adjust the amp settings to get the same volume level. By tweaking all the different models so that they have the same output level, what you accomplish is making the models sound and react less like the original guitars.

That being said, if it works for you, it's cool. Just be aware that if you're looking for authentic sounding models, you're kinda moving away from that by doing that type of adjustment.
