The Broken stuff in or out?

Darrell: When it comes to amp modeling, I’m sure you’ve wondered if we’ve ever thought about making models where all the broken attributes of great gear is turned off. Well, there’s no good reason why we couldn’t - but we think it would sound a lot like ehhh, you know…. other products (laughter).

Steve: Could I add a little more here? Because this is an interesting process and I want to expand a little bit on what Darell said:

At Line 6, it’s all about the interaction between the sound designer, engineering and the person in the capacity of the product line manager (Darell in this case). The manager of a product line is kind off a driver who pulls all of it together. Let’s consider this from a higher level and look down to how it all works…

How it works - discussions and timepath...

First stage is to selecting the appropriate target amplifier that we would like to model, Darrell said it would take about a week to model that’s only once the amp is in the building, the modeling approach is worked out and everything else in place.
The actual process in the calendar could take months to do. Not that people would be working on it every day for months but it starts with discussions on:

  1. what amp do we want to target
  2. where do we find several good ones to compare and choose the best
  3. then there’s the listening and testing and the back and fourth to decide THAT’S the one that you want
  4. and then there’s the process we just described as to going through sound design, analyze and understand what this amp makes it remarkable. What is it that this amp doing that we really want to capture.
  5. While they’re doing that, the engineers are also studying the schematic point of view and there doing there own kind of  analysis
  6. When sound design is done and they have captured and are able to explain and document and show what it is they want to reproduce, then the engineers go off and they will work on the actual DSP code that is going to do that because every single amp it really requires it.

Then there is the integration of that into the prototype and the sound designers, engineers and the product manager are working together to make sure that they delivered whatever it is that sound design identified.
