InVettagating: Charlie Burchill - April 2005 page 3
Hi again, underneath the interview I had with Charlie Burchill. Simple Minds professional Guitarist / Songwriter and joined driving force for Simple Minds with Jim Kerr. Simple Minds; A world renown band with 26 years of professional experience. With their roots in Punk Rock they shifted their music towards synth and industrial pop-like sounds and atmospheres in their songs. Charlie's atmospheric layers of guitarsound accompanied with synth like tones and the destinctive voice and presence of Jim made them a solid part of last decades musichistory. At present they're working on their new album at Wisseloord studios in Holland. With the same fire and passion inside their hearts as when they first met when they where 8 years old. The enthousiasm and drive is very obvious when meeting up with them. This is also what they put into this new recording. Charlie will comment on the questions layed before him on the use of his Vetta amps and how it got him hooked. The service and assistance that Line 6 provides for him and his involvement in writing and playing music. Charlie Burchill; guitarist, a writer of tunes that appear Simple, a creative Mind, a warm personality. How did you get in contact with Line 6? Good question, I have to think here. Ooh I know, I was using Amp Farm and loved it, then Ron Huisen was playing with Mel Gaynor and he was using the Vetta Amp. Mel talked to me and said that I should hear this amp, that I would love it. So I got together with Ron and I played it and it was really the amp 'up my street' you know. That's how that all started. I remember plugging in to the Vetta and after some minutes I knew this was the defiitive amp for me. It's so versatile. I thought they had it custom made for me. Now I had the chance to lock tap tempo and I could lock the echo and the univibe. You could have the tape echo in there aswell. I was devastated. At one stage I told Ron that the best function on the Vetta amp is the tempo lock feature. With Vetta you can have every time based effect locked to a note or note parts (1/4, 1/8, 1/16 etc.) Sometimes I start to have the tempo set manually, because I like a certain kind of rub of a tape echo. Then when we explore a new track I just lock the tap tempo to it together with a heavy vibrato. It locks and it instantly fits in the picture.
the bird that tries to get in for the last 2hours Line 6 service, any remarks? You know Vinny, I've been using the Vetta amp for the last 2,5 or 3 years now, never had any issue with it. We toured around the world and did several recording sessions. Now as we got here my Vetta amp didn't work. It would power on. So I called Ron and he was actually driving towards Hilversum at that time. He came over handed me his Amp, we exchanged my patches and we could go on rehearsing. Line 6 took care of my amp and in a few days I got it back with everything working again. Chanced the patches once again and did the last part of rehearsal and recording with my own amp again. Line 6 responds quick and will had a solution in a matter of hours. Now that's service Vinny, wouldn't you agree!
So Charlie, for you it's the ease of use and combined features? Whell I used racks with effects and had different Bradshaw boards specially build. But all the stuff you have to carry around and you can lock it together only to a certain extend. Like I said the total package of Vetta with amps, effects and routing options makes it so flexible and time-effective. I was talking to the enigineer here and he would be using two amps and dialing in tones, that take days to have the right combination. With Vetta you can dial them in and save them for future use and start from there. Of course every day you're in a different mood, you're sound evolves through the years, you always want something new or different. So the search for the right tone never ends.
Got something extra? Aaah Vinny, man what do you want. They warned me about you, you always want something extra. So lay it down , what do you want? Whell it's not what I want it's for the Vettavillian's and Vettanarians. The people that visit Vettaville or use the Vetta amp. I know they would love some of your autenthic sounds. So how about that, Charlie, friend, can I have your complete banks? Now I know why they call you Vicious Vinny, but hey you're a great guy to hang out with, even though you're on this globe for quite some time. And you're not as quick anymore as you used to be. It's also good you mentioned Vettaville, there's my sweetspot, cause that's why I granted you this interview (laughing).
I'll tell ya, I'll sent you over a couple of my sounds in a short while. But beware I'm was still using V1.06 and didn't upgrade until now. So if Vettavillian's are using that it might react somewhat differently. Most of my soundpatches are generic, so you don't have to use a special or certain guitar.
So here you'll find 5 of Charlie's original patches, Note Vetta O.S. 1.06
Will we be seeing you live again ? When the album is finished here, we'll go mixing it. Then afterwards we'll probably be shooting videos to accompany the music. The album is scheduled for somewhere September, then will do a lot of promotion for it of course. And then next year we'll be touring again I guess. Then we can have even more fun..., that'll be nice.... Hope to see all the Simple Minds fans again. And maybe we'll meet up again Vinny. It was a pleasure catching up and doing this interview. Good speaking with you again after all these years. Hopefully we'll bump into eachother once again. Take care. You too Charlie, the pleasure was all mine. So I'll be off, thanks again and for my readers at Vettaville. I'll be back..., bye for now. |
