Jake Paland, Free lance betatester for Line 6 and professional musician

Jake does some beta testing for Line 6 and got working for them when they opened their new offices in England. Now he's a endorsee. Here's some short info on Jake Paland. Accompanied with a demo from the Studio using PODxt Live and Variax. There's also a live video of a part of the same song. Enjoy.

Since you're working Live on stage with Vetta, tell us how do you connect it?

All you do in a live situation is to place a mic in front of the cab which then goes into the mixing desk. The D.O.'s basically take care of the whole process just without the hassle of placing mic's, having different mic's and so on.

The D.O.'s are perfect to run through a full range speaker system and at least I know how it sounds when it goes into the desk and don't have to worry about tripping over the mic's, moving them accidently and so on. The other main reason is that the quieter the sound onstage the more the mixer can actually do without having to fight instrument volumes bleeding off the stage. It's just a very logic thing I learned over the years.

Unfortunately I haven't tested the third party's D.O.s, but I'm quite happy with what I get from my Vetta. Of course there's always room for improvement and I'm sure it'll get even better in the future but in the end it all comes down to taste and if you can tweek a sound to your liking.

Jake, what system do you use to monitor your sound on stage?

No particular, Vinny. I've learned the hard way when playing clubs in Los Angeles that you have to work and be happy with what you can get monitor-wise. Musicians always have these massive expectations of their monitors but 99% of the time it does NOT sound like a hifi system. Quite frankly Vinny, even if it sounds harsh, you should even be able to play with the worst sound. Next evening it might be exactly the opposite !



Who was your biggest influence(s) for your style guitarplaying

In no particular order: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson, Steve Stevens, Brian Setzer, Warren Cuccurullo, The Edge.

Betatesting, what are you doing and how much time does it involve?

It depends on the stage the product is in. I had for example a very early version of an Acoustic Variax where I went through all models, each possible setting and just playing and working with it and then
writing every little detail down that I think might not be right and email everything back to the development team.



Are you Betatesting every product?

Sometimes I don't have time to test every product and sometimes not all products reach Europe during the beta phase. Since I work freelance I try to get involved with products which I also use or would use here in my studio. The best beta testing in my opinion is actually if you use it in a real life situation over weeks and notjust an hour. This is where you stumble across most bugs and also the ones that are probably not too
obvious and might be overseen in just a 'normal' test.



What guitars do you own and use?

Quite a lot. 15 or 16 I think but my main guitars ( the ones I could not live without ) are three '62 Reissue Fender Japan Strats from the mid 80's and one of the first Steinberger GM4Ts, pre Gibson and also from the mid 80's. I'm a bit of a 'fan' when it comes to old Japanese Strats and Steinbergers. Both get more and more tricky to find and whenever I see a good one I buy it! I also use my Variax 500 quite a bit. It's slightly
customized with a different fretboard and different frets but that's just because of personal taste. For acoustic I either use my trusty old Seagull or the Variax Acoustic, depending on what sound I need.

I know your infamous for your 'shooting' sounds, and have seen you perform it many times, any chance you've wanna share those secrets on how to do it?

Aah, Vinny you old devil, you ain't gonna trick me into it. But as a special favour I've got a video of a demo from last years Frankfurter Messe, that was recorded live, just with a videocamera by a friend of mine. It's not plugged into to the board so their are different noises in there. You can have that one.

It concentrates on what I use and when and not on the things I do on my guitar, allthough you can see that aswell. So if you watch it closely enough maybe you'll get a trick or two from it. I'm using a PODxt Live a Variax and a Line 6 Stompbox Delay Modeler. It's quite a large file so if people are going to download it they'd better rightclick and save, but hey it sure is different.
