POD X3 series - Variax Connectivity Step by Step... 15-11-07

POD X3 Series

Line 6 released a firmware update for the new POD X3 series. This is what has been changed in the new version(s) and added Variax Connectivity - POD X3 Live now supports Variax patch switching and saving of Variax settings with your POD X3 Patches. Here's a step by step guide on how to use it, thanks to Line 6 Forum member Crusty Old Rocker.

Part 1 Enabling Variax Global Control on POD X3 Live

  • First of all, make sure you have the latest firmware installed on your POD X3 Live. Version 1.0 of the firmware doesn't include Variax model switching support.

  • Connect your Variax to the POD X3 Live. (Without the Variax connected, the option to assign Variax models will not be available on the POD X3 Live). Please use the proper Variax Digital Interface (VDI) cable as a standard Ethernet cable will damage the sockets on the Variax and the POD X3 Live.

  • Make sure that in the INPUTS screen (press INPUTS) you have the Variax selected as the input source for Tone 1 and/or Tone 2. While the top half of the screen is highlighted (use the up arrow on the 4 way pad to select the top half of the screen), use the left-most control knob under the screen to select Variax or an option containing Variax as the input source for Tone 1 or use the second from the left control knob to select the input source for Tone 2.
  • If you don't have the Variax selected as an input source, you won't hear your Variax. Double check your output settings to make sure you will hear the Variax too.
  • Go to the INPUTS screen (press INPUTS) and in the top half of the screen (use the up arrow on the 4 way pad to select the top half of the screen) you will see on the right of the screen VARIAX with either ENABLE GLOBAL CONTROL or DISABLE GLOBAL CONTROL written above. Rotate the right-most control knob under the screen to change the setting to ENABLE GLOBAL CONTROL and save the patch you are currently using. Now your POD X3 Live is ready to control the Variax.

Part 2 Controlling Variax Settings in each POD X3 Live Patch

  • In each patch (bank/channel memory) you have the option to have the POD X3 Live control the Variax or allow you to control your Variax. If you would like to manually control your Variax, you can.

  • While in the INPUTS screen, select the lower half of the screen. You will see the word MODEL in the bottom left hand corner. If you don't want the POD X3 Live to control your Variax then rotate the left-most control knob under the screen until you see the words DON'T FORCE MODEL appear above the word MODEL. This means that the POD X3 Live will not force Variax model selection for this particular patch. You will have to manually control the Variax.

  • If you continue to rotate the left-most knob, you will see that you can scroll through the Variax models. You will also see the word TONE appear next to the word MODEL. Use the left-most knob to select the Variax model that you would like to assign to the patch that you are editing. Use the knob under the word tone (second from the left) to adjust the default Variax tone knob setting that you would like to assign.

Tip: To speed things up, if you are wanting to select a Variax model from the Variax User bank (U prefix) then just use the Variax controls to select the model and tone dial setting for the patch you are editing. If, however, you want to use one of the Factory bank (F prefix) models then you will need to scroll to the Factory bank models using the POD X3 Live.

  • Once you have assigned the Variax model and tone knob setting for the patch you are editing, press the PRESS TO SAVE button once to go to the patch name editing screen or press it twice to save the setting without editing the patch name.

Repeat this process to assign Variax models to your patches (bank/channel memories).

POD X3 - Official Line 6 Pressrelease... 20-09-07

POD X3 series

LINE 6 ANNOUNCES POD X3 AND X3 LIVE: THE NEW TITANS OF TONE, ON STAGE AND IN THE STUDIO
--Outstanding new PODs with ultra- flexible I/O and the most complete set of amps and effects--

Calabasas, CA—Line 6, Inc., industry leader in digital modeling devices and recording gear, is proud to announce the exciting new POD® X3 and POD® X3 Live, which bring even more power, ease and flexibility to the acclaimed POD® family of pro-tier guitar and studio tone processors for working musicians.

The desktop-friendly POD X3 and stage-ready POD X3 Live represent the evolution of a true classic, with an expanded array of 78 guitar amps, from high-wattage heavyweights to boutique beauties and vintage treasures. Guitar amps are just the beginning: With 24 guitar cabs, 98 stompbox and studio effects, 28 bass amps, 22 bass cabs and six vocal preamps.  POD X3 and POD X3 Live come fully loaded with the all-around sonic firepower of a top-tier major-label studio, while its larger LCD and smart new controls make it easier than ever to find, tweak and save tones.

Just as significantly, POD X3 and POD X3 Live offer powerful new I/O and routing options. Split your signal through two different amp and effect chains simultaneously, or use its dual inputs to individually process two instruments—a microphone and a guitar, for example—at the same time. Whether you’re playing through a P.A., amp or recording rig, plug your microphone into the XLR input to make vocals and acoustic guitars sound their absolute best. Computer recording enthusiasts will want to exploit the USB 2.0 connectivity (for multi-channel recording and onscreen tone editing) as well as its S/PDIF Stereo Digital Audio Output for sending an ultra-clean signal to their DAW.

Whether you choose to hit the stage with the sleek and rugged POD X3 Live (with its racecar-inspired built-in expression pedal) or command the studio with the classically styled POD X3, you’ll be outfitted with even more of the flexibility and timeless tones that have made POD the global standard for the discriminating guitarist. “POD X3 is unquestionably the most powerful and creative tone-shaping tool available to today’s players,” says POD Product Manager Michael Murphy. “It’s the natural evolution of POD technology, taken to the third power.”
