Variax Workbench page 1 - The Story

Line 6 exceeded expectations once again with the announcement of the upcoming Variax Workbench during the Frankfurter Messe in April 2004. The Variax Workbench enables you to build your own customized guitar virtually! You can do this on your own PC or Mac. You can use it on your Variax guitar of the 300, 500 and 700 model numbers.

Custom Guitar Shop @ home

Ever dreamed of your own custom guitar shop, but never had the place? Well no more worries, here it is. Now you can easily create your own modeled guitar. The Variax Workbench provides you with the right tools to create and store the guitars you've virtually carved and created. Select from a complete list of guitar bodies, choose your pickups and place them where you see fit. Tweak different parameters to design your unique custom shop guitar.

Real Time auditioning

The USB interface and software application combine to allow you to see and hear all the 'physical' changes that you make in real time. So you won't only see what your creating, but also hearing. In a physical guitar shop you'd have to wait until everything is in place and when not assembled in the correct way, start over.

Here we have the abillity to change and adjust with the movement of the mouse. Just plug your Variax digital cable into your Variax, yes that's the same cable you use to connect to the VDI on a Vetta II, on one end and to the hardware convertor box on the other side. The converter box is connected to your PC or MAC via USB.

Hey Line 6 "I want alternate tunings built in, next time"

What next time? It's already available in this package! You can create your own alternate tunings by changing the pitch and see the chord shapes on the virtual fretboard. Workbench doesn't only allow you to create your own unique guitar, it also provides you with the abillity to save that unique guitar in the tuning you want it in. Or the same model with different tunings, yeah slide on...

(the above picture is just an example not part of the Variax Workbench)

Beam me up Scotty

Now that you've created your own custom shop guitar, what should you do to get it into your own Variax? First, you can save your unique custom guitar in the included "Tone Locker" section of the Variax Workbench software, and after you've safely stored it on your computer through the Workbench's Librarian, you can send it to your Variax (or before).

Okay beam me down again

Now that you've created your own unique model, why not create another one? And another, and... You get the picture! Maybe your model would look like this in a real world?

You can create as many models as you like and store them in each slot on the Variax Model knob and five-way switch. This means you can have 60 new models in your Variax.

I want more tweaking

No, not more tweaking... well alright then. Line 6 added another unique feature. You can customize the value and taper of the Tone and Volume controls in real time. Not only tone and volume, you can also tweak, tweak, tweak the capacitators!!

Where's my Mailbox, Grandma has sent me her custom guitar tonight!!

That's no problem anymore, you can exchange your unique guitar with anyone just by emailing the tone-file to them. When they have a Variax 300, 500 or 700 and the Variax Workbench, they can easily upload it to their own guitar. So
now the outside of the Variax is the same (except for the colour) and the inner-tone-guts can be completely different. Amaze your friends with your Grandma's or your own unique tone...
