Spider Valve - Impression Summit - Part II

Spider Valve

Cleaning it up..
Since I’ve got just a half an hour to check before rehearsal I just turn it the first clean channel and see what it’ll bring out for me. Mm nice clean and rather warm tone and while even turning up the drive knob it stays clean but adds some slight edgy, not sharp sound to it. I doesn’t get gritty or dirty. The complete bass, mid, treble and channel volume seem to be a part of this amp model and reminds me to try this later to see if each separate model have different tonal ranges for each model

OLP pickup to neck position, tone knob turning down et voila we can a jazz chord or two, like to try this later with my Variax to see if an even more ‘wooden’ tone will bring out a different flavor..
I’m picking the Blue clean channel and put the tone knob all the way up on my guitar, select the neck and neck pickup position and straight stratlike tones, a quick flip on the different pickups gives a directly different sound to all the different pickups used . With this amp you’ll hear every nuance. Looking at the time, a must hurry to get to practice and go on from there. Quickly cleaning the room from the packaging material and off to a bigger room and space to take it for a “spin”..

Can you hear me?
Driving fast to the rehearsal room, it’s an cooperate building with concrete, has some industrial racks with stuff they sell in them and it large, like always we have enough ‘hall’ to do without reverb and still drown in it, but hey it’s free for us and we’ve come to get used to it.
At rehearsal I use my POD XT mounted in my Atomic 18 Watt and I really like that amp, even over the 50 Watt Atomic, that I’ve played in the past. The 18 watt version is more warm and spongy to me then the 50 Watt.

How will the Spider Valve 112 hold up when playing with a full 6 musicians band, can they all hear me, is there a distinct tone pushing through? My fellow musicians gather around and are asking questions regarding the amp. One thing that always strikes me is that modeling itself is somewhat hard to grasp for non-modeling users as to what it enables you to do.

10 o’clock already?
Now I guess I can turn the master volume up to ten o’clock to fill this ‘industrial estate’ with some boutique tone. Set it to a preset on 4A, pickup to mid position and strike a chord. WHOAA, FBV short board volume pedal where are you? Get that volume down, back to the amp, master volume to nine o’clock is more then enough..

There’s also a very nice smile on my face, this amp is loud, warm, direct, distinct on this preset. We’re rehearsing a song and ooh, ooh it’s lead time, switching to 4D “rock solo”, switching to the humbucker bridge position and what a pleasant surprise. I’m singing with my guitar tone, it’s not piercing, it’s full, bright, musical tone. I’m digging this Spider Valve at this very moment it enables me to shine and speak through my instrument. This is a piece of gear that makes me want to play even more and longer.

While my playing at hhpme at low level was nice, the amp shines even more when played at gig levels, there's always the volume issue and the changes to some tonal character but the overal tone seems to gain more punch and clarity when cranked up to higher levels..

Another go on the same song, now I know the differences in volume between the presets and what patches to pick. I don’t know what amp models these are (and don’t really care at the moment) but they fit nicely in this song, we are playing with three different guitarists at the moment one with a Fender strat and 212 Kustom amp, one with a telecopy and a small combo and myself with earlier mentioned OLP and Spider Valve, so we have plenty of guitar tones. During song parts I roll back the volume knob om my guitar and the tone cleans up a little, but keeps it’s dirty character. Read on
